Through HCF, families struggling with these issues have access to mentors, advocates, CAREgivers and counselors who can encourage them and help them overcome obstacles in their homes. We’ve also put at-home treatments in place for eligible members who were booked in to have hip or knee replacements and had their surgery postponed. During COVID-19 we're linking you in with nutrition, exercise and physiotherapy experts so you can be as prepared as possible for your surgery.
If you want to go home from hospital and die at home, we may be able to give you some support during this period. We know you’ll have lots to think about during this time and your situation might be changing quickly. Please contact us by emailing so we can consider your needs and how we might best support you. We’re also providing at-home support during COVID-19 to eligible members who’ve had hip or knee replacement surgery postponed. We have treatment at home options for eligible members on a range of treatments because we want to give you the choice of how you’re treated, whenever we can.
WHAT TREATMENT CAN I HAVE AT HOME?

HCF’s treatment at home program was a godsend for Matthew Grootenboer, a married fireman with four children, after he discovered in June 2019 that he had testicular cancer. As Australia’s largest not-for-profit health fund, we’ve put the care of our members first for nearly 90 years. Manage your health
While we’re expanding services for treatment at home, we only cover specific treatments that we have contracts with providers to deliver. If the reason you’re in hospital or need treatment at home is in any way related to an incident, accident or surgery you can claim compensation for from another party then you won’t be covered by your private health insurance. In some cases home health care can provide all the help and assistance needed without going to the hospital for an extended stay. The purpose of in home health care is to treat injuries and illness while helping the patient regain strength and independence, making them as self-sufficient as possible.
The facilities we support provide specialized tertiary care for all of Newfoundland and Labrador. If you have been a patient or visitor at any of Eastern Health’s adult hospitals or health centres, chances are you have used a chair, hospital bed, piece of equipment, program, or technology the Health Care Foundation supports. Treatments at home aren’t actually covered by our policies like treatment in hospital is.
ACCESS VITAL HEALTH SERVICES AT HOME
Giving you access to a wider range of treatment options in the comfort of your own home. Our charitable trust was set up to encourage research and enquiry into the provision, administration and delivery of health services in Australia. There are no out-of-pocket costs for treatment at home through HCF-contracted HST providers.
However, there is no limit on the health care providers list of duties. We consider your treatment at home complete when the care you need can be given in the community, rather than what you’d have to stay in hospital for. When you finish your treatment, the HST provider will refer you to community services if you need them. As an example Hospital Substitute Treatment for complex wound care means we’ll pay for the treatment for the time you would’ve stayed in hospital. Eligible members should talk to their treatment team about at-home treatment options while they’re in hospital. The Health Care Foundation raises funds to improve the delivery of care in adult hospitals and healthcare facilities in the St. John’s region.
HCF Research Foundation
Identifying whether or not you need home health care starts with knowing exactly what it is. Home health care provides a wide range of different services to be given in your home to help with illness or injury. Home health care can be just as effective as health care received in the hospital, as well as often times being more convenient, and less expensive. Rachel has been with HomeLife for over 5 years and is passionate about homeschooling and meeting the needs of students and parents. Having made the jump from public school to homeschooling her children, she understands the importance of community and support for new homeschoolers. Her hope is to be part of that support and to help provide new opportunities for homeschoolers through HCF.
Though only recently introduced to the Homeschool Care Foundation, Joseph was on board with its mission from the beginning. He was homeschooled all through grade school and high school, and knows firsthand the benefits of homeschooling. He is hopeful that more people will be able to experience the joy and freedom of homeschooling through the outreach and help of the Homeschool C.A.R.E. Foundation. If you feel like you are having more trouble at home than you should, express your concerns to your doctor. Talk about the different options you have, you may not be aware of all the options. So you can get the quality care you need without having to visit a hospital.

But we’ve chosen to pay for some treatments you can have in the comfort of your own home when we can make sure the treatment can be given safely and at the same, or better, quality than in hospital. These treatments at home are called hospital-substitute treatment because the treatment at home takes the place of treatment you’d have had to go to, or stay longer in, hospital for. Ask your doctor or hospital if there’s an option to be treated at home in your case.
You should talk to your treatment team about at-home treatment options while you’re in hospital. For starters, a doctor or physician’s orders are required to begin home health care. There’s a difference between adjusting to living at home after surgery, and needing real assistance at home. A doctor’s recommendation is always in the best interest of the patient, they are looking for the best solution to help you recover in the most successful way.
